Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to buy the pre-cut kits to complete this course?

Not at all. The kits are simply there to help you build alongside the lessons and save time on your first box. Our goal is to teach you the techniques so that you can confidently produce your own boxes from scratch using the templates provided.

How do you recommend cutting the box materials?

If you're not purchasing the pre-cut kits, we highly recommend using a guillotine (paper cutter) for the best results. Even an A3-sized guillotine is a fantastic investment and will make production much faster, easier, and more accurate. An electric cardboard cutter is another great option, especially if you'll be making boxes regularly.

If you're only making one or two boxes, you can simply print the template, tape it securely onto your board, and cut everything by hand using a sharp craft knife and a metal ruler.

We've also added some cutting tool recommendations to the PDF guide to help you choose the best option for your needs.

Where can I find the templates?

The printable PDF templates and Adobe Illustrator (.AI) files are available underneath each lesson.

If anything appears to be missing or you're unable to access a file, simply send us an email at info@letteringbygrg.com, and we'll send it over to you straight away. We're always happy to help!

How much velvet or linen do I need for each box?

Every student receives a physical kit, making it easy to measure exactly how much fabric is required.

As a general recommendation, we suggest measuring your first kit once you've completed it and using that as a reference for future production, especially if you're making boxes in different sizes.

To make one single box, a rectangle of 11 x 29 inches (approx. 28 x 74cm) of fabric will be optimal for the 4 pieces required, with minimal cut-off/excess.

When should I apply foil to the velvet?

If you'd like to add gold foil, a monogram, or any other printing to the velvet fabric, we recommend doing this before attaching the fabric to the box. This gives you the cleanest, most professional finish and avoids applying heat or pressure to the completed box, which could cause it to warp or become damaged.

We don't cover the foiling process in this course because it requires specialised equipment, such as a Hot Foil Stamping Machine. There are many different machines available online to suit a range of budgets, so you can invest in one whenever you're ready.

If you're looking for a simpler alternative, Etsy offers a wide variety of beautiful pre-made embroidered monograms and letters. These can easily be applied to the finished box after assembly and create a luxurious, personalised finish without the need for specialised equipment. It's a fantastic option if you're just getting started or aren't ready to invest in hot foil stamping yet.

How long should I wait for the glue to dry?

Drying times will vary depending on the adhesive you choose. For the glue used throughout this course:

  • Initial grip: approximately 20–30 minutes
  • Full cure: approximately 24–48 hours
Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for your chosen adhesive.

What size invitation fits inside the box?

The templates included in this course are designed to fit a standard 5 × 7 inch invitation (approx 13cm x 17.8cm), along with the accompanying inserts shown throughout the lessons.

Which type of Velvet Material do you recommend for the Boxes?

For our high-end invitation boxes, we use a suede velvet (short-pile). It offers: An elegant appearance, Excellent wrapping properties around rigid corners, and great results with hot foil stamping.

Traditional long-pile velvet can look luxurious, but it's more difficult to wrap neatly around sharp corners and is more prone to marking.

When searching for Velvet materials online, we’d recommend using the term “Suede Velvet for Bookbinding”.

Can I use different fabrics?

Yes! Although we demonstrate the process using velvet, the same techniques can also be applied to linen, and many other fabrics which are suitable in book binding.

Always test your chosen material first, as thickness and stretch can affect the finished result.

Will you sell box structures without fabric?

We're currently considering offering additional kit options based on student feedback.

One idea we're exploring is supplying pre-cut box structures without fabric, allowing students to use their own materials and colours.

How should I price these boxes for my clients?

Pricing will vary depending on your country, target market, level of craftsmanship, and business model, so there isn't one "correct" formula.

As a general guideline, we typically aim for approximately double our total production cost, plus enough to cover our labour, design time, overheads, and profit.

For example:

  • Total production cost: €19
  • Retail selling price: approximately €39 per box
This is simply the method that works for our business. We encourage you to adapt your pricing based on your own costs and market positioning.

Will the course be updated over time?

Yes! This course isn't something we intend to launch and leave untouched.

We're continually collecting feedback from students and will be adding new lessons, FAQs, resources, and improvements over time to make it as valuable as possible.
