2019 WEDDING CAKE TRENDS
Today, with the help of Suzanne from CoveCakeDesigns we’re bringing you the top Wedding Cake Trends for 2019.
Wedding cakes are usually inspired by the chosen details of a couple’s day, such as venue style and architecture, wedding flowers, stationery suite and dress details. The latest trends that are seen in weddings as a whole hence naturally translate into new fashions in wedding cake design.
As a wedding cake designer it is always exciting to see emerging trends and embrace the opportunity to try new styles and techniques. 2019 is set to be an exciting one for wedding cakes…here are a few of my favourite trends!
Flowers have always been a traditional adornment of wedding cakes and 2019 will be no exception.
This year, as well as the decoration of cakes with beautiful organic fresh blooms, sugar flowers are set to make a major comeback. We will see more organic and asymmetrical sugar flower arrangements on cakes, in keeping with the trend for wedding bouquets with more movement and texture.
Floral choices will still include conventional ones such as roses and peonies, but with the addition of varieties such as dahlias, scabious and foraged elements such as berries and branches. White with an abundance of foliage and pastels are still popular color choices, but pops of more vibrant colors will also appear.
ELEGANT ROYAL DETAILS
The classically elegant style seen at the Royal Wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex last year will definitely influence weddings and cakes in 2019.
From simple all-white cakes reflecting Meghan’s exquisite dress, white and green florals reminiscent of that incredible arch or regal details such as gold leaf and monograms….we all fell in love with the Royal Wedding and it shows in cake trends!
The most lasting effect of the royal wedding though will be to bring the cake itself back to centre stage…no longer an elaborately decorated ornament, the royal choice of an elegant Lemon and Elderflower Sponge cake affirms that a cake should taste as good as it looks.
Textured cakes are set to be huge this year. Top of the trend is that of stone-textured fondant cakes, with subtle marbling adding additional colour and textural interest.
Pioneered by American cake artist, Jasmine Rae, stone texture can often be a beautiful reflection of the architectural surrounds of a wedding venue and is also a perfect canvas for floral arrangements. Imperfections can be accentuated with abstract gold leaf or subject to repair with the ‘golden joinery’ of Kintsugi.
Wedding cakes are first and foremost a delicious celebratory treat to be enjoyed with family and friends.
Equal attention is now given to the cake flavour with 2019 seeing even more adventurous choices for guests, bearing in mind our renewed interest in food seasonality and provenance. Think summer berries or foraged elderflower in June and rich chocolate ginger in winter.
Quality of ingredients is paramount and delectable flavour combinations such as Chocolate Orange Olive Oil, Rosemary Ganache and Hazelnut Praline will certainly be worth waiting until the evening buffet for!
